"Steve needed to cover a lot of material but it never felt rushed or forced. His sense of calmness and experience gave one confidence. The simulations were excellent and Steve gave wonderful feedback and always asked if there were questions. He used an inductive and discovery methods of teaching which encouraged us to think and find out the answers."

On Water and On Land
On Water
Canoeing, Kayaking (Coastal & Whitewater), & Standup Paddleboarding
My love of outdoor education was ignited while teaching canoeing at Camp Karoondinha and has expanded to guiding multi-day canoe expeditions (love the luxury of not carrying everything on my back). I have been active with the American Canoe Association as a Level 2 Kayak Touring instructor for 7 years teaching one on one and small groups. I am currently working on developing my whitewater kayaking skills and hope to teach in this venue as well. Standup Paddleboarding has become another avenue I like to take to apply my connectedness to water as it offers a unique way to build confidence and body awareness.
Experiential Leadership Development
Indoors and Out
Leadership is my passion and I firmly believe that everyone has the capacity to lead, it is simply a matter of identifying one's unique talents, skills, and abilities and developing these "muscles" through applied experiential activities. Though I love watching people conquer their fears on 60ft challenge course, one can experience similar results through collaborative challenges in an indoor setting as well. In addition to facilitating programs myself, I am also passionate about developing an individual's ability to innovate through experiential education.
On Land
Backpacking, Camping, Wilderness Survival
Taking a much-needed escape from the constant stress and movement of everyday life is essential, yet many fear they do not have the ability to do so. I love teaching people how to be confident in their outdoor skills so that they can enjoy all that the world has to offer. I use a progressive approach which allows the participant to gain more responsibility as they gain more confidence in their ability.
Ethics & Risk Management
CPR, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Policy Development, and Outdoor Ethics
When one thinks of outdoor activities one often associates the perceived danger of the activity. Often times these risks can be mitigated through proper training and planning. As an American Red Cross Instructor Trainer, I enjoy teaching people how to inspire confidence in responding to emergency situations, but more importantly, preventing these situations from occurring in the first place. As we consider risk, we must also be aware of our impacts as we recreate in outdoor spaces. This includes not only environmental concerns, but an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
"Your demeanor is always so perfect for these trainings! You do an amazing job of balancing the educational and serious components with a fun and open attitude which always results in awesome sharing among the group members and a memorable experience!"
